Longhope Opera 2025 brought Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers to life in a fun, vibrant, and gloriously inventive production, powered by an incredible team of creatives who infused the classic opera with fresh energy and irresistible charm.

Story Summary

At the heart of the opera was Isabella, a clever and confident Italian woman who washed ashore in a foreign commune in search of her lover, Lindoro. He, meanwhile, was about to be forced into marriage with Elvira, the neglected wife of commune leader Mustafa.

Mustafa, bored with Elvira and eager for an Italian bride, became infatuated with Isabella—who had no intention of being anyone’s conquest. With wit and courage, Isabella turned the tables, reunited with Lindoro, and outsmarted the men around her through a hilarious “pappataci” ritual, where Mustafa agreed to a vow of silence as Isabella made her daring escape.

In the end, Mustafa learned a lesson in humility, begged Elvira’s forgiveness, and vowed to give up on Italian women for good.
